The imperial U.S. military has had a presence in the Middle East for decades, an endeavor which has brought Americans exactly zero benefit. This is why Trump’s decision to pull out of Syria was met with wide public support. Of course, you wouldn’t know that if you only paid attention to the reaction from the media and government officials. But by criticizing a common sense, popular action like this, they only reveal themselves as the Israel First war-mongers they are.
Normal Americans are asking: why stop with Syria?
After a 15-year U.S. occupation, the Iraqi government is asking the same question.
“Iraqi lawmakers were smarting after the U.S. president left three hours after he arrived without meeting any officials, drawing unfavorable comparisons to the occupation of Iraq after the 2003 invasion.
‘Trump needs to know his limits. The American occupation of Iraq is over,’ said Sabah al-Saidi, the head of one of two main blocs in Iraq’s parliament.
Trump, al-Saidi added, had slipped into Iraq, ‘as though Iraq is a state of the United States.’”
Multiple members of parliament have called for a vote to expel American troops from the country.
Iraq is under American control, and the American military can depose its government at any time, as it has already shown. So, while their complaints about violations of sovereignty are impotent, they are understandable. The United States is using Iraq as a vassal state to deploy troops in order to serve Israeli interests. As frustrating as it is to watch this happen as an American, it’s probably even worse as an Iraqi.
Americans don’t want us to be there. Iraqis don’t want us to be there. There is no national interest served by the occupation.
Trump has already ordered withdrawal from Syria. He has floated the idea of doing the same in Afghanistan. Now, Iraqi lawmakers are actually asking him to leave.
Give them what they want, and give the American public what it wants. Get out of Iraq NOW.
